OHT-N and Community Health Centres of Northumberland partner to host Women’s Health Event

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, Tuesday, May 6, 2025 – The Ontario Health Team of Northumberland (OHT-N) and Community Health Centres of Northumberland (CHCN) are partnering to offer a free Women’s Health event on Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CHCN’s Port Hope (99 Toronto Road) location.

The inclusive event, open to all women and anyone with a cervix including Two-Spirit, trans and nonbinary people, will offer cervical cancer screenings, educational health information and support to those who may experience barriers accessing screening and resources, including patients without a family doctor.

“Women’s health is foundational to building strong families and communities,” says Taryn Rennicks, Executive Director of Community Health Centres of Northumberland. “Our hope for this event is to emphasize the importance of all individuals with a cervix seeking support, educating themselves and prioritizing regular screenings to protect their health and well-being, without common barriers such as access to primary care, transportation, childcare, and more.”

Flyer for Women's Health Event, June 14, 2025. Includes cervical cancer screening & menopause talk.

The event will focus on women’s health at all stages of life, including prenatal and postnatal care, cancer screening, gender-affirming care, social prescribing, and pelvic floor physiotherapy. Dr. Barbara Weiss, a local naturopathic doctor specializing in digestive disorders, hormone health and healthy aging, will also deliver a talk on perimenopause and menopause, beginning at 10 a.m.

Members of the public, between the ages of 25-75, in need of cervical cancer screening and those wishing to learn more about perimenopause, menopause or women’s health services available in Northumberland County are encouraged to attend.

“Cervical cancer screening remains a cornerstone of women’s health. It enables early detection, providing a critical window for timely intervention and treatment. With regular screening, cervical cancer is not only highly preventable but also highly treatable. We urge all eligible individuals to stay current with their screenings - this simple, proactive step can make a profound difference in protecting long-term health.” Kaitlin Loudon, Primary Care & Community Engagement Lead, Central East Regional Cancer Program

Pre-registration for cervical cancer screenings is required. To check your eligibility and to register, please call 905-885-2626 ext. 300 or book online at chcn.me/ohtn-cervical-screening. Transportation and childcare will be also available to attendees if required.
